Eye Irritation Due to Tree Pollen

Irritation of the eyes can happen when someone has an allergy towards tree pollen. Spring to the autumn season is the allergy season as the pollination of different trees happens a lot during this period, depending on the variety of the trees. Here are some of the explanations on what this tree pollen can cause towards eye irritation for allergic people.

  • The conjunctiva or the tissue that surrounds the eye has many mast cells, which are part of the immune system. This mast cells catalyst release the body’s natural histamine to counteract foreign substances, such as tree pollen, that cause the allergic responses in the eyes.
  • Some trees may produce a high level of pollen compared to the other trees. These trees will cause the strongest eye irritation during the time of their pollination. An allergic patient should be aware to keep distance from these trees such as oak, elm, box elder and hickory.
  • Stay inside the house and stay away from going outside are the relatively effective ways to minimize and prevent eye irritation caused by the tree pollen. Avoid going to the outside of your house especially during the periods of high pollen release and heavily wooded areas. HEPA or high efficiency particulate air could help to ensure the air circulation inside your house is safe and clear from any foreign allergens such as from tree pollen.
  • If eye irritation happens, use the over-the-counter antihistamines which are available in any pharmacies to treat the symptoms, use stronger medication prescribed by your physician if the eye irritation becomes worse. Consult an allergist to get a stronger prescription of medicine and eye drops that contains antihistamine.
