In general, mail carriers such as people who work for the U.S Postal Service are federal employees. They are bound to subject of standards and rules regarding to gifts, gratuities and tips, which are known as “Standards of Ethical Conduct for Employees of the Executive Branch”. However, if you still want to show your appreciation to the mail men, here are some simple rules of that you can hopefully adapt.
- Give your mail men small gifts first. The Federal ethical guidelines allow mail men to accept gifts with a value of maximum $20 or less than that amount.
- Do not give the mail men cash gifts. It is not permitted for mail men to accept direct cash gift even if the value is $20 or less.
- Decide on the presentation instead. Your mail men can receive a gift that you can hand to him/her personally. Or, the mail men can pick up an envelope left in your mailbox or in the mail slot of your door or taped to the floor.
- Address the envelope to your letter carrier by name or with a simple note such as “To the mailman” to avoid confusion with the regular mail.
- Do not give gifts to your mail men for other risky reasons. Gifts should not be given as an exchange for a service from your mail woman. Your gift is a gift, and her job is her job. There should not be any relation in any direct fashion.
