How to Clean your Dogs Ear Safely

It is important to make sure your dog are cleaned and groomed well to make them stay healthy and happy. A dog’s ear can be the dirtiest part in your dog that could harbor bacteria, which could bring to disease if they are not cleaned properly. You don’t have spend more to bring your dog to the pet’s shop for grooming as you can do it by yourselves with the right tools and steps. Here are ways on how to clean your dog’s ears.

  • Purchase an ear cleanser from a pet store or ask your vet for the type of cleanser that he/she uses. You will also need cotton balls or a damp paper towel for the cleaning process. Never use Q tips or any cotton tipped applicator as they can push the debris back into the dog’s ear.
  • Make sure to calm your dog before cleaning, hold your dog with one hand firmly. Squeeze the ear cleanser into the dog’s ear using your other hand.
  • Message the cartilage at the base of the dog’s ear gently. This will help to get the cleanser into the ear canal and loosen any dirt and debris that is in the dog’s ear. You will hear a swoosh sound during this process. Be careful as at this point, dogs like to shake their heads.
  • Clean the dirt that you can see when you look into the ear with the cotton ball. Avoid digging around inside of the dog’s ear as you could poke the ear drum or push the debris further into the ear. With your index finger and damp paper towel, clean the only debris that you can see and don’t stick your finger into the canal.
  • Repeat the previous steps on the other ear. You can repeat these steps once or twice depending on how dirty your dog’s ear is. You might have to clean them several times a week according to the breed of the dog.
  • Your dog will shake some more once you have finished cleaning up the ears. So, you have to be careful.
