Repairing Nylon Zippers

Repair Nylon Zippers

Don’t let a zipper make you think that your favorite dress or purse has reached its lifespan. Repairing a zipper also saves you money from going to the tailor. The first thing you need to do is to find the cause on why your zipper isn’t closing.

There are 2 areas which are the usual causes of stuck zippers:

Stuck materials

Look for a thread or material caught in between the teeth or a gap in the closure to identify the source of your zipper troubles.

When you find any; cut away the thread or material in between with a pair of embroidery scissors or a razor. Only then do you attempt to pull the slide over the congested area.

After the slider is pulled to one side, rub a bar of beeswax along the zipper for lubrication purposes. Repeat this process of pulling the slider to the other side and back and coating the zipper with beeswax until you experience fluency in sliding across the zipper.

Wrong alignment

Sometimes, your troubled zipper could be caused by the production process with gaps. To fix this, you will need a pair of pliers to remove the metal bar at the end away from the fabric of the zipper.

Slide the slider along the zipper from the side where the other metal bar is still attached to the side where it needs to be closed. Sliding down the zipper will help to realign the teeth.

Once that is done, thread your needle with a double length of heavy nylon thread to stitch the base of the zipper where the metal stop was removed just now.
