Turning your Diary into a Designer Diary using Old Bed Linen

How to Turn your Diary into a Designer Diary using Old Bed Linen

Here’s how you can turn your boring store-bought spiral-bound diary into a designer diary using old bed linen that may be too washed out or hole-y to be used anymore

  1. Measure the front cover of your diary. If you have a spiral-bound diary, measure only up to where the spirals start.
  2. Using the previous measurements, cut out two pieces of thick cardboard of the same size.
  3. Cut out also two pieces of thin wadding or foam padding of the same size.
  4. Next, mix one part PVA glue with one part water to dilute the glue.
  5. Spread a thin layer of glue over the thin sheet of wadding or foam padding and scrape of the excess if any. You do not necessarily have to cover the whole piece right up to the edges to avoid unnecessary messes.
  6. Press the thick cardboard over the wadding or foam padding. While waiting for it to dry, leave the phone directory or a heavy book on top of it to help it stick better. Do the same for the other two pieces.
  7. While waiting, choose a piece of bed linen that you no longer use or want. Alternatively, you can also cut these pieces out of your old pair of jeans. You can use any type of fabric as long as it is not see-through.
  8. Add approximately 2 inches or more to both sides of the previous measurements and cut two pieces of the same size out.
  9. Lay the fabric cut-out on a flat surface with the front facing downwards. Once your cardboard-wadding piece is completely dried, place it in the middle of the fabric cut-out, with the wadding facing downwards.
  10. Using a glue gun, dab a bead of glue onto the four corners of the fabric and fold them diagonally onto the cardboard-wadding piece.
  11. Now, put a string of glue onto the back of the cardboard, about half an inch away from the edge. Fold all four edges onto the cardboard and press them down. Run a ruler over all four edges to help them stick better and also to spread the glue out beneath. Leave it to dry with the phone directory or a heavy book on top. Do the same with the other piece.
  12. Once you have your two covers ready, spread the PVA glue and water mixture all over the cover of your diary, leaving the spiral edge out. This time, try going all the way to the edge. Scrape off any excess. Place your new diary cover onto the original book cover and press down. You should glue on one side at a time to avoid the covers from running out of place when they are not dried. You now have an expensive looking diary.
